Tetmajerowska

The restaurant is located on the 1st floor of Spiski Palace (Pałac Spiski) - jewel of architecture in Cracow. The same building which houses HAWEŁKA on the ground floor. The name of Tetmajer Restaurant comes from the "cooperation" between keeper of the restaurant and Włodzimierz Przerwa Tetmajer. The typical situation in case of meeting between an art patron running a restaurant and a bohemian. Lack of money made it impossible for painter to settle his accounts. Waiter notifying the owner on that, used to lose his tip but posterity had a chance to get a new masterpiece. Tetmajer was running into debts on the ground floor and he was paying for drinks and dishes by painting on the first floor. This is how patronage and artistry unified not only driven by objectives. Far earlier then futile attempts to bring together propertied class and working intelligentsia. Thanks to this merger, beneficial for both parties, future generations can admire coffered ceiling with geometric and floral ornaments and a beautiful frieze illustrating the story of Master Twardowski. Paintings of the artist became a symbol of the restaurant which has been uninterruptedly opened since 1913.
